The Great Dane 2.0?
The term ‘The Great Dane’ tends to be associated with Manchester United, famously coined by their supporters for Peter Schmeichel. The 6ft4 blonde-haired, red-nosed, bellowing goalkeeper was a sight to see. His starfish save to halter any centre forwards’ effort on goal was of sheer brilliance. Just ask Ian Wright… (who never scored a Premier League goal against the Dane).
Fast forward 24 years and Manchester United now have another 6ft-odd, blonde-haired Danish player in their midst. Signed in July 2023 for a staggering £72 million, quite a significant difference to that of the £500,000 ‘bargain of the century’ for Peter back in 1991. Oh, how times have changed.
I’ll be honest, I hadn’t heard much about this kid before his arrival to Old Trafford, other than his goal tally for the 2022/23 season for Atalanta in the Serie A. This at best was very mediocre, with a glum 9 goals in 32 appearances. Not exactly anything to write home about. However, at the tender age of 20, he has plenty of time to form into a formidable striker. With the likes of Bruno, Sancho and Rashy all feeding this guy, I’d suspect he’ll have plenty of opportunities to rack up the goals. Fingers crossed.
If you think the Premier League can be a cruel place, combine that with playing for Manchester United too. Ruthless with nowhere to hide. It’s a test to even the most experienced of players. Think of Falcao, Wilf Zaha, Alexis Sanchez, Angel Di Maria…Mame Biram Diouf.
I suspect all Manchester United fans, like myself, will be hoping and praying that he will deliver a goal return beyond our wildest dreams.
